This means homeowners will have to do very little maintenance to their deck. Other advantages of using hardwood for decking in the San Francisco Bay area are that the wood, stays cool because it doesn’t absorb heat, it outlasts many composite materials, it is scratch resists scratches, and has good slip resistance which makes it ideal for high foot traffic areas in commercial projects as well as for residential use. Ipe, cumaru, garapa, massaranduba, and jatoba are often used to build decks, docks, pergola, boardwalks, outdoor kitchens, outdoor showers, mailboxes, ceilings, sidings, fences, gates, gazebos, cabanas and benches. A great thing about ipe and cumaru is that they have an A-class fire rating, which means they are fire retardant materials just like concrete and steel.

In a small San Francisco space? Not ready to make a full commitment to a deck? Deck tiles might be the right solution for you. Deck tiles are 24” by 24” tiles made of either ipe or cumaru. They are installed over pedestals called deck connectors, which makes them easy to install without the need of major tools. They are modular tiles that are also semi-permanent, so if you move, they will move with you! You can give your balcony or rooftop a new look. Either line up all the slats in the same direction or alternate the tiles so as to create a fun pattern. As a chemical free, long lasting material, hardwood deck tiles are a great choice.
